This Panel Discussion is part of the pre-WCQR2024 program. The 8th World Conference on Qualitative Research will be held from 23 to 25 January 2024 in São Miguel – Azores (Portugal), Johannesburg (South Africa), and online.
One of the highlights of my (Arceli) journey as a qualitative researcher was my encounter with teen mothers, who due to their cultural context suffered from social stigma. During the last phase of our data collection, our research team held a photo exhibit participated by community leaders and members. As one of our participants alighted from a vehicle and walked toward the venue, a team member pulled me and whispered, “Look! She walks like a queen.” This presentation focuses on the potential of qualitative research to empower marginalized groups, particularly those who are entangled in socially-sensitive phenomena. The exploration of this empowerment theme is anchored on ethical frameworks and strategies set on the intersectionality of religion, class, gender, and culture. Our discussion of theoretical concepts is supported by the empirical study that we conducted on the cohabitation of couples who are members of a Christian church in the Philippines.
